Ryu Hyun-jin (36, Toronto) threw his first bullpen appearance since surgery.
MLB.com, the premier source for Major League Baseball news, published an additional interview with Ryu on Saturday that was not included in its story from two days ago.

Toronto’s coaching staff and teammates, including manager John Schneider, stood behind him and watched him throw.
According to MLB.com, “The entire Toronto pitching staff watched Ryu’s bullpen and applauded when he finished.”
On how he lost weight, Ryu said, “I worked hard on cardio and weight training. Stopping eating late at night was the biggest secret to losing weight.”
Ryu, who underwent elbow ligament splicing surgery on June 19 last year, is on track to return to the major league mound in mid-July.
According to MLB.com, “Most pitchers who have had surgery don’t give a clear timetable for their return. “It’s common for them to say, ‘I’m following the team’s plan,'” said MLB.com. “Ryu is different. He doesn’t hesitate to talk about when he will return.”
“From the beginning, I said I wanted to come back after the All-Star break and be part of the team again. My goal is the same now. I made a rehabilitation schedule for my return in mid-July.”
The Major League Baseball All-Star break is July 11-14.
“I started throwing my changeup and curveball,” said Ryu, who hopes to return to the big leagues in 50 days. I still have some work to do. I need to increase the number of pitches, and I need to throw my cutter,” he said. “The most important thing is to get my starting pitcher’s body back.”
