New York Mets left-hander Brooks Reilly, 35, has added another hold. He entered the game in relief in the top of the ninth inning with the Mets leading 4-2 against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field in Flushing, N.Y., on Sunday (Feb. 2).
The leadoff batter he faced was Bryce Harper. Harper is one of the biggest superstars in baseball, with a 13-year, $330 million contract with Philadelphia.
But for Reilly, he was just a strikeout sacrifice. On a ball count of 1B 2S, Reilly struck out swinging on an 81-mph (130-kilometer) sweeper. He then gave up a single to Nick Castellanos, but struck out lefty slugger Kyle Schwarber on a 91 mph (146 km/h) sinker to end the threat. Philadelphia sent right-hander Drew Ellis to the plate to pinch-hit for lefty Brandon Marsh, and the Mets sent right-hander Drew Smith to the mound.
The game ended in a 4-2 Mets victory. Reilly also picked up his 13th hold of the season. He is now second in the National League in holds. In first place is Peter Stzerecki of the Milwaukee Brewers. Stzerecki has 14 holds on the year. If he continues his streak, he’ll be able to challenge for the title of hold king.
Reilly is another example of a player who capitalized on his success with Lotte in the KBO to make it back to the major leagues. In five seasons with Lotte from 2015-2019, he went 48-53 with a 4.13 ERA. His success in Lotte didn’t always match the quality of his pitches. In 2019, his final season with Lotte, he went 5-14 with a 3.88 ERA in 181 innings pitched.
After playing for the Cincinnati Reds in 2020, he was traded to the Houston Astros, where he went 2-3 with a 4.78 ERA in 58 appearances and 10 saves in 2021, helping the team win the World Series, and last year he had the best season of his career with the Tampa Bay Rays, going 1-3 with a 2.68 ERA in 60 appearances and 25 saves. Traded to the Mets prior to the season, Reilly has continued his strong play this year, going 1-1 with one save and a 2.84 ERA in 23 appearances.
